POSITION DESCRIPTION:

In the Family & Children Services Division, the primary purpose of the Social Service Worker 1 is to provide support to families, children, older adults and providers within Family and Children Services. This position may determine and/or redetermine clients' eligibility for publicly funded social services programs AND/OR conduct certification/re-certification for county social services providers AND/OR monitor the functioning of county social services providers.

This position performs necessary duties for families, children, older adults or providers following prescribed case plans devised by higher-level social workers. In addition, the incumbent arranges/provides for transportation and/or health care services; makes referrals as needed to appropriate Agency unit or community agency.  Responsibilities in this position also include performing various clerical duties associated with social services providers, establishing and maintaining contact with community agencies, medical providers, and other government agencies to coordinate referrals and follow-up on services rendered; and answers public inquiries.  This position may serve on internal/external committees and attend various agency meetings.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Completion of undergraduate major core coursework or two years technical training in behavioral science, social science, early childhood development technology, education or related field.
  • Or four courses in behavioral science one of which must be in child development or two years
    experience in behavioral science of which 6 months must be in the area of child development, one course or six months experience in business mathematics, one course or six months in experience in interviewing, one course or six months experience in typing, keyboarding or word processing.
  • The incumbent must possess a valid driver’s license and required insurance. 
  • This position requires the incumbent to access non-ADA compliant homes or facilities.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate’s Degree in a human-services related field of study.
  • Knowledge and use of various computer programs.
  • Previous training and/or experience in a human services related field.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, including experience in taking minutes, keyboarding and interacting with the public.
  • Ability to work independently

UNUSUAL WORKING CONDITIONS/HAZARDS:

Applicant must have the physical and visual ability to enter homes and facilities that may not be ADA accessible.  This position involves regular exposure to environmental factors (i.e. cold, excessive heat, noise, fumes, vibration, dirt) during interviews and meetings conducted outside of the office. The position may involve lifting or carrying children, carrying and installing child car seats and exposure to contagious diseases. No heavy labor is involved; however, risk of injury stems from going in and out of conditions that may or may not be safe. The incumbent may occasionally interact with angry or hostile clients. This position requires the incumbent to access non-ADA compliant homes or facilities.
