Pay: $33,467.20 annual minimum salary, dependent on qualifications and experience
Hours: 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday; on-call as needed

Summary of Responsibilities:

Under direction of the Chief Dog Warden, enforce statutes governing licensing and regulation of dogs with owners and kennels.

Summary of Essential Duties:

Enforce license checks during complaint calls, issue citations, and seize and impound dogs.
Investigate dog bite cases in conjunction with the health department and quarantine dogs.
Investigates and determines validity of claims for damage to animals as defined by ORC 955.51 and related statues.
Appears in court as required.
May investigate cruelty to animal claims.
Oversees pet adoptions; dog licensing; administers first aid to dogs as needed; feeds and cares for dogs as needed; secures, traps, tranquilizes, transports, and euthanizes as appropriate.
Carries appropriate weapons and tools to complete tasks.
Interacts with Humane Society. Receives and responds to telephone complaints, prepares and maintains records, reports and other required documentation
Organizes, prioritizes and schedules work activities in order to meet objectives; ensures that proper resources are available to complete assigned work; monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work; consults with Chief Dog Warden and other staff to assist with complex/problem situations and obtain technical expertise; provides progress and activity reports to management.
Completes, prepares, reviews, processes, forwards and/or retains a variety of documentation associated with department/division operations, within designated timeframes and per established procedures and legal requirements. Prepares various documentation, including timesheets, expense reports, and other records related to activities of the office including but not limited to livestock reports, dogs impounded, sold, redeemed, transferred, and other claims under the revised code.
Prepares or completes other various forms, reports, correspondence, and other documentation as necessary.
Operates a personal computer to enter, retrieve, review or modify data, utilizing, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint Publisher, word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation, Internet, email, and financial record keeping software; and operates/maintains general office or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.
Communicates with the general public, commissioners’ office, elected and appointed officials, outside agencies, cities, villages, townships, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge and awareness of applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures pertaining to functions of county dog warden; maintains an awareness of new procedures, trends and advances in the profession; participates in continuing education activities; attends meetings, workshops and seminars as appropriate.

Summary of Requirements:

GED or high school diploma and Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission Basic Humane Agent Training prior to hire or complete prior to the end of the probationary period.
Must possess and maintain an Ohio driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
Must be available to work nights and weekends with little notice.
Must be available for after hours call outs and respond appropriately to calls within a reasonable amount of time.
Must have physical and mental ability to perform essential functions prior to hire or prior to the end of the probationary period.
Must work with the public, subordinates, peers, elected and appointed officials in a professional manner.
Must work independently or as a team.
Prefer vocational/technical training in animal behavior or related field, or any combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge skills, and abilities for the position.

Preferred Requirements:

Graduate of Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy

Unusual Working Conditions/Hazards:

Must be able to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, walk, run, lift, carry, push and/or pull objects, materials, and/or animals of moderate weight to heavy weight.
Must be able to perceive and discriminate sounds, odors, depth, textures, and visual cues or signals.
Must be able to communicate orally.
May be exposed to adverse environmental conditions such as dirt, dust, smoke, water, mud, pollen, odors, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, vicious animals, wildlife, toxic agents, disease, or pathogenic substances.
